Your brain was still in bed

Posted 21/9/2026

You walked into that parking lot with the confidence of someone who had a plan. Rows of cars, painted lines, maybe a letter or number on a concrete pillar if you were lucky. And yet, twenty minutes later, you were wandering around clicking your key fob at nothing like a lost penguin.

Here is the thing nobody talks about. Your brain was not actually awake yet when you parked. Spatial memory, the part of your brain that files away "I left the car near the cart return and the slightly dented blue minivan," needs to be warmed up to work properly. And most of us park before that warm-up ever happens.

Scientists who apparently get paid to study parking lots found that caffeine directly sharpens spatial memory. It helps your brain actually encode where things are, rather than just vaguely gesturing in the general direction of your morning. Without it, your brain is basically a sleepy intern just showing up and hoping for the best.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple. Drink your coffee before you get to the lot. Not in the lot. Not at the machine after you park. Before. A proper cup, with actual intention behind it, and suddenly your brain starts behaving like it belongs to a functioning adult.

Roaster/Cafe Notes:

Fratello Coffee Roasters (https://www.fratellocoffee.com/ )

Calgary

In their own words: “Our father, Cam Prefontaine, initiated us into the coffee culture through our family's first venture, Fontaine Beverages. From those early years in 1974, destined for a life steeped in this culture, we—Chris, Jason, and Russ—took our first entrepreneurial leap in 1991, co-founding Espuccino Imports. This venture quickly gained prominence, becoming North America's third-largest distributor of Nuova Simonelli espresso machines.

In 1997, we reached a critical juncture. We purchased Custom Gourmet Coffee from our parents and merged it with Espuccino Imports. This allowed us to create Fratello Coffee Roasters, a one-stop-shop for coffee lovers. Leveraging nearly five decades of family involvement in the industry, our mission was ambitious but clear: we aimed to redefine the coffee experience in Calgary and Western Canada while pushing the boundaries of industry innovation. This led to the creation of the renowned Slayer Espresso machine in 2007, which set new global standards for brewing coffee.

In 2011, we ventured into the café scene with the launch of Analog Coffee. This wasn't just another café; it was the embodiment of our vision for a world-class coffee experience. Though we've since sold this division, it marked a significant chapter in our journey. Carrying forward nearly 50 years of family expertise, now, we're channeling our collective decades of experience and passion back into Fratello Coffee Roasters, with a renewed focus on refining and elevating every aspect of the company.”
