Your kitchen cabinets are lying to you

Posted 25/9/2026

Wood grain is one of the sneakiest things on the planet. You are just standing there, minding your business, waiting for the kettle to boil, and suddenly your kitchen cabinet has a face. Not just any face either. A full on dramatic expression, like it has opinions about your life choices.

Scientists call it pareidolia. Your brain is so good at finding patterns that it starts inventing them when there are none. Faces in wood. Animals in clouds. Entire soap operas playing out on your bathroom floor tiles.

Here is the wild part though. A tired brain does this way more than a rested one. When your mind is running on empty, it goes full Hollywood and starts projecting stories onto every flat surface in your home. Your cabinet is not haunted. You are just running low on sleep and possibly caffeine.

This is where coffee earns its keep. A proper cup does not just wake you up. It actually sharpens how you see the world. Suddenly the cabinet is just wood again. The clouds are just clouds. Your floor tiles are not whispering secrets anymore. Perception, it turns out, is heavily influenced by whether or not you have had a decent brew.

The wood grain will always be there. But whether it looks like art or a small judgmental goblin is entirely up to how well you caffeinated yourself this morning.

Roaster/Cafe Notes:

Bono Coffee Roasters (https://bonocoffee.ca/ )

Calgary

In their own words: “At Bono Coffee, we are committed in developing exceptional specialty coffee. Bono Coffee is a family owned business based in Calgary, sharing our deep-rooted Ethiopian coffee culture to our community.

Growing up in Ethiopia, Bono Coffee founders, Dawit Wubie and Danait Tesfay have first hand experience in the daily life of hand roasting coffee and transforming it into the most magical cup of coffee ever tasted.

It all started in 2012, when Dawit traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for business venture and joined his sister in the coffee roasting business and supplying it to local shops and stores. From there, his passion for coffee flourished and he made it his goal to bring Ethiopian coffee to his community, here in Calgary and to the world.

Having to start a family, Dawit’s coffee dream was put on hold. In 2019 Dawit together with Danait decided to start a small batch coffee roasting company and supplied it to his community within various farmers markets. Bono Coffee Roasters was born and now people everywhere can experience that magical tasting cup of coffee. With amazing community support and feedback, Bono Coffee is committed to grow and serve the local community.
