Dishes that multiply while you sleep

Posted 26/5/2026

Somewhere between "I'll do them in the morning" and actually doing them in the morning, a small miracle of multiplication occurs in your kitchen sink. One bowl becomes four. A single mug spawns a family of mugs. A spoon appears from nowhere with what looks like yesterday's soup on it, and you genuinely have no memory of soup.

Science calls this "fatigue-induced selective memory." Normal people call it lying to yourself while standing at the sink, too tired to care, fully convinced you did a thorough job. You didn't. The evidence is sitting there judging you before 7am.

Here's the thing about exhaustion and honesty - they don't really get along. Tired brain will tell you anything to get you into bed faster. "Those are basically clean." "That pot just needs a rinse." "Future me will handle this." And future you, standing in the morning light squinting at the carnage, has some thoughts about past you that are not particularly kind.

This is precisely why coffee exists before any major decision-making happens. Not because caffeine solves problems, but because it makes you honest enough to admit you created them in the first place. A good cup cuts right through the nonsense your sleepy brain cooked up the night before and reintroduces you to reality, gently, with warmth.

London, Ontario

In their own words: “At Black Walnut Bakery Café, coffee isn’t just a drink, it’s an art form. We know taste, acidity, and body are all important factors that come together to make a great cup, so we put a lot of thought behind the coffee we put our name on.

We created our own passionate Black Walnut Roasting Team to source the very best beans from around the world, all fair-trade and organic, and lovingly roast them locally, in small batches, at our Richmond location.”
